Quilting is my passion, my creative purpose and my platform for storytelling

Quilting is probably the oldest form of needlework, and continues to evolve and mature as our surrounding world does. Unlike our ancestors, the quilts of today do more than fulfill our practical needs, now they decorate and enhance the spaces we use everyday.

Some five years ago, I met the most wonderful lady called Donna, with a larger than life personality, she had a confidence only the Americans can have. I had groomed her dog Gracie, and was dropping her home. Donna invited me in.

What greeted me was an explosion of colour, a battlefield of creations covered every inch of the room. Stashes of vibrant fabric from floor to ceiling, shelves overloaded with bright printed cottons, spools of thread in every shade lay scattered - a kaleidoscope of creativity.

Each surface, every inch of wall space had the beginnings, and ends, of quilts, each one at different stages of their design brilliance. Sketched scribbles were pinned up, ideas being born, books lay open invitingly, pages filled with the promise of creation and I was blown away.

At that moment I asked her to teach me everything she knew.

She would give me a lesson in exchange for grooming Gracie, this was not enough for me, I was so hungry to learn more, so very soon I was paying Donna as much as I could afford in return for her guidance and expertise. She sold me a second hand sewing machine, this is where it began. I’ve never stopped quilting from that moment.

Every quilt I have made since this day has its own history, its own story, its own occasion to celebrate.
